Emergency contraception pills (also known as the Morning After Pill or Plan B) can be taken up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex to help prevent a pregnancy. The sooner after unprotected sex the emergency contraception pills are taken the more effective they may be. Emergency contraception uses the same hormones that regular birth control pills do, in a different dose, to prevent pregnancy from starting. A woman who is already pregnant will stay pregnant even if she takes emergency contraception pills. Women can see a provider at Allen Women's Health to receive this method. If someone finds themselves in need of emergency contraception when our clinic is closed, anyone, woman or man, 17 years old or older can buy these pills at a pharmacy, without a prescription, for around $40-$50.
